For exploring the world of special effects, I feel a chorus is a great place to start. And this is one to consider: sounds good, 3 simple controls, sturdy case with good knobs and an LED, what else do you need? Also, it has a silent footswitch, meaning there's no click when stomping. Or if you get it to click, you just likely cracked the metal housing... I don't really mind, but it's a touch.
