Wonderful guitar but needs set up
Tommi A. 10.04.2026
I bought this out of curiosity to try a Player ii series guitar. I wanted to compare it to my Fender Standard Strat (Mexican) with Fender CS Fat50s pickups and Fender American Special Tele with Texas Special pickups.

I was really positively surprised: the tone beats either of the previously mentioned guitars. Very stratty tones, clearly on the high output and bright side, which I like. Perfect for Fender amps, and for Marshall type amps, the treble can be tamed with tone control. In addition the playability and feel is excellent for this price range. I really like the feel of the neck: it is easy and fun to play and does not have any dead notes or sustain problems. The guitar also looks beautiful - the fretboard rosewood is nicely dark and smooth. The guitar is really light weight because of chambering.

Nevertheless, the finishing quality is not totally perfect. Some frets were slightly gritty at the beginning. In addition, there are small lacquer bubbles at the end of most of the frets likely because of fret sprout from dryness. Speaking of which, the guitar has clearly been manufactured in humid environment and stored in dry afterwards: the fretboard was dry and truss rod needed significant tightening. String action was a bit high and pickups were too low in the factory setup to my taste. Also, the springs needed tightening for the bridge and intonation needed very slight adjustment. Luckily, there was no significant fret buzzing.

It should be noted, that all my earlier Fenders have needed similar setup while Gibsons have come with perfect standard setup from the factory. I went to the local guitar shop to check the fret sprout problem and saw similar phenomena even in American Professional II strats. So it seems to be Fender brand finishing quality overall.

All in all, a great guitar for the price. Actually prefer this to many more expensive models. Rather would buy 2 Player ii Fenders than one Professional.

Lovely guitar, but...

I should start by saying I really like this guitar, I'd have given it 5 stars across the board for the way it is now. It looks beautiful (shows more grain than in the pictures), sounds just like a strat should, and plays really nicely, but it's taken some work.
It arrived in unplayable condition, the neck was like a ski jump, the strings were corroded and the fretboard was bone dry and finished with 80 grit sandpaper. I expect a bit of setting up and then tweaking to taste with a new guitar, it's all part of the fun, but if it hadn't been so pretty, I'd have sent it back. At times it felt more like repair than setting up. After a lot of fettling of the truss rod and saddles (and new strings), the fretwork is fortunately pretty good. I've got the action just the low side of normal and there's no sizzle or choking, there were a couple of very slightly gritty frets but nothing a few hours of playing didn't clean up. The fretboard is rough, it drank loads of oil which helped and maybe it's supposed to be like that, I can't feel it when I play, but I don't like the way it looks. I don't need it glassy smooth, but I like how the light hits a smooth, well oiled board, so it's getting polished at the next string change.
In conclusion, it's a beautiful guitar, it now compares very well to a friends 90s American strat for playability and tone, but if you aren't comfortable doing a setup, factor in the cost of getting someone to sort it out for you.
