Fantastic Uke - For the Non-Tradionalist
I've had this uke for about two years now, but haven't gotten around to reviewing it until now, because I only started practising with it this spring.
So far it has proven to be a fantastic performer.
It's light and indestructible, won't mind heat or humidity, won't warp or swell. And boy does it look good. And boy does it pack a punch.
The non-tradional look and the material composition are the main reasons why I chose this uke for myself. Also the reasonable price, good reviews all-round, reputable brand, and apparent excellent build quality all factored in to my decision.
And now that I've played it - and with it - for the past few months, I can say how it sounds and handles for me.
First of all, it is loud. You might not expect that, since it has no traditional sound hole, just slash like slots on the front, and a smallish sound hole on the top side. But these, together with the carbon composite construction i guess, seem to do the trick. So you don't need to strum or pick as hard to get good volume.
Secondly, it has a very pleasing tone quality to my ears. It's bright and kind of snappy, and not at all screechy. String choice of course plays a part in this. So far I've not replaced the factory strings, which I believe are clear fluorocarbons. I can't wait to try this instrument with nylguts, or sugars, or brown carbons.
Thirdly, it has incredible sustain. I haven't tried playing with a felt or a leather plectrum yet to see how that would affect the sound and sustain.
The set also has great little extras. Mine came with a strap, a few light gauge plectrums, and a very nice padded and fitted sling-case.
All-in-all, a fantastic instrument and a great buy. Especially if you like a more modern aesthetic and innovative material compositions.
