Put the "DIST" to low, level high and use equalizer to give a mid boost to signal. This way the pedal IMHO really shines as a "dirty" boost to a distorted tube amp to really deliver the good metal tones. It also is less noisy than using an EQ pedal to do same.
Tbh I would not use it as a main distortion, but it is way cheaper than any decent amp.
The EQ knobs are annoying small, and feel bit fragile. Otherwise Boss build quality is stellar as usual.
