Exactly what I was expecting from the Ibanez Prestige line
After looking for a versatile strat style guitar with HSS pickup configuration as well as stainless steel frets, locking tuners and a roasted maple neck I decided the AZ2204N would be my choice. Fender has nothing even close to these specs within this price range and having tried out a bunch of Professional IIs as well as Performers, Ultras and AV2s I decided to go for the Ibanez Prestige series. I wasn’t happy with the quality of the Fenders. Certainly they were solid enough, but with the features on offer they simply pale against the 2204N.
First of all the neck joint on AZ guitars is superior to anything Fender has ever done. Neck access on this guitar is super easy and comfortable. The Gotoh trem is something I’d upgrade on most Fender strats, including MIM and MIA series, unless I’d want a more “vintage accurate” look, feel and function and I really don’t. The saddles are comfortable and the bridge feels and functions exceptionally well. I ended up removing two springs to set up the trem to float and the guitar hardly goes out of tune.
Overall the guitar was set up superbly well at the factory and I felt almost bad measing with the setup as I changed down to a lighter string gauge. The build quality is incredible, the guitar was in a perfect condition. The guitar feels as it should, premium. The finish is perfect and the guitar looks stunning.
The pickups sound really good, they’re pretty all-around sounding, voiced to cater towards crispy, chimy strat tones and the humbucker has a bit more meat and bite to it in a way that still feels proportionate to the single coils. For anyone unsatisfied with the pickups for them being “too modern” or “hot” may want to take a Phillips head screwdriver and screw in the pickup screws to lower them and for the “too low output” crowd may feel like doing the exact opposite. Furthermore, the guitar also has a tone knob, known as a quick remedy to tame some of the harsher frequencies.
Overall there is no way I could recommend this guitar enough. Within the AZ Prestige range you will find guitars of the highest quality, made with exceptional care and attention to detail. You simply won’t find similar features on any of their US competitors anywhere close to this price. If you’re looking for a guitar to do it all and that has all the premium features with build quality to match the value proposition, you simply can’t go wrong with these guitars.
