Better than the normal GAP
This is used in a project studio.
Air +3db is the one I use, but it does not sound anything like MAAG. It sounds great tho.
Powersupply is still crap, but passable. The box itself is great, why dont they fix the power supply? It is manageable but irritating - there is going to be a lot of buzz for high gain application because of it. If used with condensers it is not noticeable. Also if you do some ad-hoc shielding it is fine. Bear in mind the casing is not shielded, so keep away from other power supplies.
The distortion and "driving" the pre works, but it is not as usable as more expensive pres. Considering the price it is great. The output is a bit hot, but that is also a good thing.
Considering all the nitpicking here, it is still as good or better than SPL goldmike, at least I prefer this. But it loses to real 73 and APi stuff. It sounds vintage if you want, and clear and open if you want. It does a bit of everything. It has delivered great results, after a lot of testing. Recommend this for people who want to fidget on controls a lot.
*** Edit.
This item has broken down after a year of use in a smoke free studio. Started having noise, will not give as much gain as before (mutes on -45) and it took at least a day to troubleshoot due to the intermittent symptoms. So pushing this back for service, might sell it afterwards.

GAA Pre-73
Oh boy this is a beautiful unit. I have tracked vocals with this piece of beautiful gear now for a couple of months. I love how this colors my tracks and I think it will be a permanent resident of my studio.
For the cost of 500 bucks you can’t go wrong with the Pre-73. I haven’t noticed any shortcuts with the sound or the construction. The only con is that the power supply is external and I personally would prefer to have the standard european power cord instead of this 24v plug. The good thing is that the current power plug is more resistant to interferance but the standard european is more sturdy.
Pros
+Great sound
+Extremely affordable
+High End Components (Carnhill transformers)
+Nice EQ and Pad switches on the front
Cons
-The power supply could be sturdier
All in all I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. I will definately order another unit so I can choose to track stereo with the same tonal palette.
