Coated strings are the way to go
Wanet Planes 24.08.2025
For the longest time I primarily played the basic D’Addario 9-42 strings on my 25,5” guitars and I’ve always been fond of their strings. Previously I’ve used Ernie Ball, Pyramid, Rotosound, DR Strings among others, but D’Addario strings have been my go to ever since I first tried them.

Then I tried Elixir’s coated strings and I was sold. The playing feel felt really nice and slick as well the sound felt brighter and to retain the snappiness of a new string for longer than conventional guitar strings. After a year of exclusively playing Elixirs I tried out a few boutique guitars strung with D’Addario XS strings and I fell in love, once again.

In all fairness I can’t say how much substantial difference there is between these and Elixirs, however I tend to gravitate towards these despite having half of my guitars strung with Elixir and half with the XS.

All in all the XS tend to feel better over time, retaining a smooth and slick comfort for a longer duration than the Elixirs. At least it feels like it to me. I’m more than happy to remain with D’Addario as I have had a great experience with their strings and hope to remain with them for the foreseeable future.

Finally, I use these on a Gibson scale (24,75”) LP style guitar. I usually prefer 9-42s on my strats, but prefer to have a little more tension on the shorter scale length.
